Dancing was also a popular leisure activity. Especially after WWII, it is said, there would be dances just about once a week. Music was provided by citizens of the island. Musicians would think nothing of getting together and playing for a dance.
Captain Herrick’s Ocean View Hotel in Swan’s Island Village had a well used dance floor. Once the Odd Fellows Hall was built in 1909, dances were held there.
In the village of Atlantic, during the 1970’s, Mertic Morrison would have music and dancing especially during the summer months when the summer population was present.

As Marion Stinson said in her audio, island musicians were often self-taught. Islanders were also able to take lessons from people on the island.
Randal White was one of many islanders to have music lessons. Mrs. Elizabeth Stanley Heming, wife of an island minister, was his music teacher. Randal was honored to play a trumpet solo, “You Tell Me Your Dreams” for his eighth grade graduation in 1950. Randy still plays today!

Ballroom dancing was also a popular pastime. This picture of ballroom dancers was taken in the 1950's. Islanders would plan ballroom dances using the Odd Fellows Hall or they would travel to other towns where a dance was being held.
