Swan's Island: Six miles east of ordinary

The lives and stories of a unique community

Exhibits

In creating our exhibits, especially the islanders at work and play exhibits, we have had to work with scant primary source information. After the fire that destroyed the library where much of Swan’s Island historical primary source materials were kept, the Historical Society turned to its citizens to reclaim as much as possible. This is being accomplished by sharing family photos, personal artifacts, oral histories, and stories. It has been a labor of love and all who have participated are grateful to share their history with you. What islanders hope is that you will be able to see and hear about our ancestors and what we have learned about Swan’s Island from them. In many ways we are not really different from other small Maine towns. In some ways we are different. So please enter our exhibits, listen to our stories, and make your own comparisons as if you were visiting our island.
