Swan's Island, a six mile ferry ride out of Bass Harbor in Mount Desert Island, is the current home of between 300 and 350 year round residents. Lobster fishing is the main trade, and islanders continue the tradition of living off the sea that was started when the first human foot hit island shores. From Native American shell middens to the rusted remains of quarrying equipment, Swan's Island holds a living history of the industries that have sustained its residents over the centuries.
