Winters would also be a time to find islanders joining in winter sports of an informal nature. There are three good size ponds on the island. One is in Swan’s Island Village called Mallye’s Pond. It is next to today’s Post Office/Town Office building.

Goose Pond is in the interior part of the island and there is the Quarry Pond in Minturn which was created by the filling in of water when the quarry stopped functioning. The ponds made for excellent ice skating and were used regularly.

Sledding was also a popular winter past time and there were enough hills worth making the slide exciting. Donald LeMoine is heading down Steamboat Hill Road. It is one of the better sledding roads in Swan's Island Village except that it ends at the water.

Families would also make ice cream when they had enough snow for the ice cream makers. Russell (son at left) and Judson Smith were making ice cream, circa 1942. Soon after, Russell left to fight in World War II.

Always an example of winter fun was having kids build something when the snow was just right for sticking together. These two imaginative kids built a snow horse to take them where they wanted to go.
