Summer Pleasures cont'd

Ice cream socials were also popular in the 1940s occurring when islanders walked to places like the Seaside Hall for a dance. This was a time when the young people on the island got to meet people from the other sides of the island. Each of the three villages had their own stores, churches, schools and post offices, so the young people took advantage of the socials to get to know people from the other villages. One islander told me that her grandparents met for the first time in their mid-20s at the Seaside Hall. Her grandmother was from Atlantic and her grandfather was from Minturn. He was widowed at the time and they had never met before.
