Holiday Events

Warmer weather combined with national or local holidays brought islanders together for celebrations. One such celebration was Memorial Day. Old and young would gather near the Veterans Memorial. There would be a parade, speeches and music. After a brief ceremony at the town memorial park, people walk down to the fisherman’s co-op wharf and watch a wreath being thrown into the harbor commemorating those whose lives were lost at sea.

Swan Islander’s would gather in Swan’s Village to participate in 4th of July celebrations. There would be a variety of races for the kids and in the evening there often were fire works.

During the 1960-1980s there were lobster bakes at the ferry terminal as part of the Fourth of July celebrations. Islanders would make a point of having a lobster meal as part of their 4th celebrations.
