As members of a small island school, many of Swan's Island's k-8th grade school share common ancestry. When Kim Colbeth's 3-5th grade class started studying the island quarries, many of her students had stories about a common relative: Fritz Johnson. They brought in photos of Fritz doing the old "twist and kiss" stone cutting move.

Fritz John Johnson (1899-1985) was born in Sweden and moved to Swan's Island to work at the quarry. He married Evelyn Lora Martin in 1922 and they lived on the Quarry Road. Fritz was reported to be the fastest paving stone cutter of his time.

Dori Lemoine, one of Michael Fournier's 6-8th grade students, is a resident genealogical whiz. She took on the task of determining which of her classmates are related to Fritz, and how. Check out the document below to see what she found!
