Baird's Quarry

Swan's Island granite was quarried at sites around the island, providing work for many laborers and the businesses that supported them. The largest and most well known of the Swan's Island quarries is Baird's quarry, and it is that site which we will explore in this exhibit. For information and audio clips on Swan's Island's other quarries, click here.

A group of Swan's Island students led by 3-5 grade teacher Kim Colbeth have been learning quarry history with their eyes, hands, and feet. They've visited Baird's quarry to see the rusting remains of the once-busy industry, dug in the dirt for artifacts, and learned about their own family connections to quarry workers. Please join us in our exploration of Baird's quarry, from its working days to its present state.
